It was quite the show at Ruby Tuesday this past Friday! This was mostly due to the performers who were set to play that night. My ears haven't been so bombarded with different styles of music in such a short period of time other than when I flip through the radio stations in my bucket but the only difference is that radio sucks and the show at Ruby's definitely did not.
The show started out with some accoustic rhythms by Chris Whitney. Then came an avalanche of "what the fuck is this?" as I was drawn to the stage area by the sounds of Goatbucket, a one man live act by Satch Poddington who weilds the mighty diddley-dow, a custom banjo like instrument made of a cigar box and electronics. |

If someone lived downstairs I surely felt bad for them as the crowd stomped to the beat of Goatbucket's kick drum. Truly awesome music! Up next was Naserine Machine. This was my first NM show I've been to and I was glad to finally see it. My mind went from drunken stomping to calm introspect as I was put into a trance by the strange sounds produced by Maxx Davis. Kick ass, Meathead!
Next came a true shocker for me. The Electric Grandmother took the stage with wife Mary Alice. Twas their anniversary that night, too. As EG spat out hip-hop styled flows about popular 80's movies and 90's sitcoms, Mary provided the audience with visual interpretations of the songs on a projection screen which made the set perfect. You MUST see Electric Grandmother live to appreciate the combo of the audio/visuals. |

Then came time to touch bass with the one, the only, Nerd Table! Not only was there an anniversary in house there was also a birthday. Adam Casto, the lead singer, is now an old fuck! He got an Official Beer Chugging glove. It was phatty. CHUG!
So the Nerds took the stage and rocked out with their self proclaimed massive cocks out. I was about three pitchers in when my batteries died in my camera so I couldn't get too much video. I wish I could've gotten the last song they played where Jacob became possessed by the drum gods and went off into a manic, unrehearsed solo that got the crowd going. A will to rock, indeed! It was a fun night that I'll never forget and try to duplicate. If you haven't been to a show yet then what the fuck are you waiting for? Estelle Getty? |
